The resistance of the Jenin Observatory
During our weekly meeting on August 8, 2024, Maysoun Dawoud, Head of the Observatory of Violence Against Women in Jenin, shared essential information about the current situation in Jenin and the Observatory's activities.
The situation in Jenin remains critical for the local population, marked by a severe lack of food, water, electricity and access to internet. Israeli troops continue to strictly control access to essential services in the West Bank, leaving entire cities devastated and cut off from the rest of the territory. The recent Israeli attacks have claimed 14 lives in the city, adding to the suffering of the residents. Jenin’s families are increasingly turning to the Observatory of Violence against women for help.
Despite these extremely difficult conditions, the Observatory of Jenin continues its work. The Observatory recently organized three summer camps, welcoming 200 children, girls and boys, aged 11 to 15 years old, to work on post-traumatic stress disorder caused by conflict. These camps provided a respite and psychological support for children in the midst of chaos.
At the same time, the Observatory of Jenin continues to hold weekly meetings with women, offering training and activities aimed at bringing them out of isolation and returning them to a certain normality. The mayor of Jenin, while concerned about the risks involved, fully supports these initiatives. Local solidarity is also expressed through the involvement of volunteers who, despite the dangers, come to lend a hand in the organized activities, allowing the Observatory to continue its essential work on behalf of women and children in Jenin.
