The International Observatory on Violence against Women places the fight against violence against women in the continuity of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As part of the 2024 Campus Seminar of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) from February 19 to 23, 2024, the International Observatory on Violence against Women called on all local elected officials to protect women and children victims of violence in their territories to work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDGs 2030).
Every year, UCLG organizes an internal seminar with its members to update advocacy strategies and governance priorities. This year, the Observatory on Violence against Women of Seine-Saint-Denis was invited to present the issues of the project “For territories that protect women victims of violence” within the assembly. This debate was part of the broader issue of the major orientations that the Global Task Force platform led by UCLG wants to follow.
In 2024, the Global Task Force aims to formalize a representative body of local governments to the United Nations (UN). It is thus a matter of participating in the advances of the SDGs 2030 by having the voice and role of local authorities recognized in the pursuit of these objectives.
Ernestine Ronai, Head of the Observatory on Violence against Women of Seine Saint Denis, pleaded for the necessity for local governments to prevent violence and protect victims. The fight against violence against women requires a close response intrinsically linked to the construction of democratic societies and the resolution of SDGs such as the elimination of poverty, world hunger, gender equality, and many others.
